Petty Betty Part Two
Hey {{first_name}},
I prefer being honest with you all, since you're taking time out of your day to read my newsletter, and I have a confession to make. According to the survey results, I've been putting toilet paper on the roll wrong my entire life. Not sure how this could've happened, or how no one cared to tell me this the past 33 years, but I can't fix the past. I'd like to apologize to everyone and instead shift gears towards something that I can't be wrong on. My opinion!
My first "Petty Betty" newsletter was about a topic that hits very close to home for me, and this is another one that I'm sure is going to be divisive. What I'd like to expound upon today is that all condiments are unnecessary. Yes, you heard me right.
The Oxford definition of condiment is:
A sauce, etc. that is used to give flavor to food, or that is eaten with food
Based upon this definition, and echoing a belief I've held for the past 20 years, condiments are used to disguise the natural flavors of certain foods and instead present a different flavor. For example, in order to mask the flavor of most potato products, they are usually eaten after being drenched in gravy, sour cream, or some other sauce. That means potatoes by themselves do not have a desirable flavor. If you like French fries for example, do you truly like them or are French fries simply a vessel you use to eat ketchup? And what the hell is poutine anyway?
In the past few years, I've dabbled more into learning how to cook and I decided to start with cooking meats such as burgers and steaks. Whenever I'm preparing a meat, I use some form of spices and brown sugar to make a rub that I coat the entire piece of meat with, then as the meat cooks the spices are cooked directly into the meat. If you're already spending the time to prepare the meal, why not invest that time into flavoring it while it cooks as opposed to simply adding a sauce after its been cooked? This is the main reason I don't like to use A.1. Steak Sauce, because a properly seasoned steak doesn't need steak sauce added to it, but I digress.
The main difference between spices and condiments is that spices are added before the meal is finished, and condiments are added after the meal is finished. I think if we did a better job of seasoning foods, condiments wouldn't be necessary. I also think that we if took a hard look at everything we eat with condiments, we'd probably come to the conclusion that we shouldn't be eating that stuff. Hot dogs were a necessity to survive in the 1800's but we have so many other options now. Why are we still subjecting our bodies to this?
That's just dirty.
