October Useless Observations
Hey everyone,
My last newsletter was titled Bully and it’s still as appropriate as ever. I went from being bullied by the United States Census Bureau to now being bullied by a pitbull puppy named Mabel. Life comes at you fast, but not as fast as October has flown by. Because we’re in November, it’s time for another installment of a fan favorite here at Corbin’s Corner: Useless Observations. Last month’s edition can be found here. Let’s get started before Mabel wakes up from her nap.
UO #1: Why does a Toyota Corolla have the ability to go 150 miles per hour? When would a Toyota Corolla ever need to go that fast?
UO #2: James Harden has been traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Los Angeles Clippers but for some reason, the Oklahoma City Thunder were involved and agreed to send one of their countless future first-round picks to the 76ers. What benefit is there for the Thunder to be involved in this trade? Why would any sports team engage in a three-team trade? Why would the Thunder help a rival Western Conference team land a perennial NBA All-Star and potential Hall of Famer?
UO #3: When I was in school, they used to make us go through driver’s education classes and drug abuse resistance education classes. The latter was referred to by the acronym D.A.R.E. Instead of drug education, they should provide gun education in schools. School children are way more likely to encounter guns than they are someone offering them drugs.
UO #4: If crime is always happening in New York City, how does Miles Morales sit still long enough to get his fresh haircut? Is his Spider-Sense tingling the entire time he’s trying to get lined up?
UO #5: As the Australian Open approaches several tennis players will be making returns to compete, but one name that will be missing is Venus Williams. I’ve always wondered why Venus doesn’t get the same praise and acclaim that her younger sister Serena does. Venus was the first Black woman to reach the #1 ranking in the Open Era and although she came up short multiple times against Serena in multiple Grand Slam finals, she dominated the rest of the field for decades. I feel like they should both be treated like icons of the sport.
UO #6: In August, I was able to visit Ireland for a week and I was surprised to find out that hotels in Ireland don’t have those generic clock radios in them. I think that’s a trend that should make its way to the United States because those clock radios are useless and take away an available outlet I could use for my cell phone charger or CPAP machine.
UO #7: Food advertisements always utilize movement. Either the food is moving in the ads, or the camera itself is moving in the ads.
